GROW Community Foundation Project

In October 1999, the Foundation approved a 10-year, $30 million grant for the Giving Resources to Our World (GROW) initiative, a program designed to build and strengthen community foundations throughout Kansas as a way to support leadership development that improves the health of Kansans. It was established around a vision for helping communities raise local funds for local needs.

The program began with grants to the participating community foundations for financial and technical assistance, which allowed each community to establish a local office and set a fund-raising goal. Since the beginning, the Foundation has continued to assist these community foundations through a number of matching grants programs.

To date, the Foundation has invested $23.8 million in local community foundations. When the Foundation began the program, the 12 participating community foundations had assets of approximately $19 million. As of December 2007, that number had jumped to more than $77 million. The Foundation’s investment helped leverage approximately $38 million in endowed assets to these community foundations.

As a result, these foundations are now viewed as community leaders capable of matching donors with real needs that improve the health of these communities. The 12 community foundations currently in the program are: Community Foundation of Dickinson County, Golden Belt Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas, Western Kansas Community Foundation, Douglas County Community Foundation, Coffeyville Area Community Foundation, McPherson County Community Foundation, Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas, Legacy Community Foundation, Manhattan Community Foundation, South Central Community Foundation and Russell County Area Community Foundation.

In July 2009, the Foundation announced its funding of GROW II, a second phase of the community foundation initiative. To find out more about the guidelines and application procedure for GROW II, please click here.
