2010 Major Initiatives

Below you will see the major initiatives approved by the board of directors in 2011. Most of the grants are multi-year initiatives commencing in 2011, with funds distributed throughout the grant's duration. Grant Amount: $500,000

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to the Open Door project to expand the availability of public health services for at-risk and disadvantaged populations, meet an important community need, and also allow the Foundation to again partner with a program/organization of the United Methodist Church.

Funding to help furnish the Lawrence Community Shelter project would expand the availability of housing and public health services for these populations in the Lawrence/Douglas County area.

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to support UKSM-W in its efforts to expand to a four-year medical school program. This expansion will include the development of a new curriculum for first and second-year students that teaches basic science subjects through problem-based, patient-centered learning. Additional faculty and staff will be needed for the expansion, which is where the Foundation's support will be used. Funds from this grant will be used for a full-time faculty position that will serve as director of science education and an associate dean.

The purpose is to provide funding to the Kansas Leadership Center to manage a three-year expansion of the Public Square Communities and an evaluation of the results.

The purpose of this grant is to prepare local, regional and the state public health agencies in Kansas for application and compliance with the newly-developed national public health accreditation standards. Through the administration of two projects-one managed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the other by the Kansas Health Institute (KHI) - public health officials in Kansas will gain a better understanding of the accreditation standards and how to prepare their agencies for the accreditation process.

Recruiting the minimum number of schools has been an ongoing challenge in Kansas. In attempting to find ways to get more schools to participate, the leading challenge is that schools do not see a benefit from allowing the surveys to be conducted, thus the lack of motivation to provide class time for survey administration.The purpose of this grant is to provide resources-in the form of $500 incentive payments to persuade schools to participate in the YRBS survey.

This grant is designed to raise the awareness of the serious health problems related to poor oral health and to provide research-based solutions on how Kansas can best address this problem.

The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to Kansas Action for Children (KAC) to serve as the lead agency on the project to bring the Dental Health Aide Therapist (DHAT) workforce model to Kansas. This grant is meant to join the contributions of other state and national funders in planning, developing, laying the groundwork and working toward legislative approval to make this new provider category a reality in the state.

The purpose of this grant is to join with other health philanthropies in Kansas to create a pool of funds to support the efforts of the state of Kansas to implement the programs, measures and requirements mandated by the federal health reform legislation passed in March 2010. These funds would then be made available, on an application basis, for state agencies, communities and other stakeholders throughout Kansas that will need funds to participate in national and regional health reform activities.

The purpose of this grant is to provide funds to the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians for a pilot project to assist up to eight (8) interested primary care physician offices in the state with the implementation of the patient-centered medical home model and provide education to the public about the benefits of the medical homes model.
